Life Lessons from a Business Transition

Two years ago, we sold our family’s hardware store. A business we transformed and prepared for a successful exit. Here are three insights I’ve gained since selling the store:

1️. The Value of a Well-Planned Exit – Selling a business isn’t just about the transaction; a well-planned exit puts you in the driver's seat to make better decisions. We were able to determine how we wanted to protect our legacy, our employees, and our community. Planning ahead also allowed us to maximize our business’ value, know our financial position and plan for life after the sale.

2️. Change Brings New Opportunities – Letting go of something familiar can feel daunting, but every ending opens the door to something new. I've stepped into speaking, coaching, and writing. I am able to serve my community as a City Council Member.

3️. Another Chapter– Selling your store doesn't have to be the finish line; let it be a launching pad. Now, I’m able to share our story with independent retailers to help them build value, prepare for their transition, and finish well. The next chapter is waiting.
